Oscar's Adirondack Smoke House: By Mail or Camp Messenger

While we enjoyed visiting boy #1 in Maine, other friends had to go to the Adirondacks to visit their camping offspring. Being a typical New York City kind of guy, I really didn't think of the Adirondacks as more than a 1) a place upstate, 2) where the Hudson River starts and 3) a big state park. In addition to this, I have discovered that there is also an excellent smoke-house in the Adirondack region of New York. As an added benefit to those of us who do not usually find ourselves amongst wide open natural beauty far from urban places, they deliver! The place in question, of course, if the Oscar's Adirondack Smoke House, located in Warrensburg, NY (1-800-627-3431).

Oscar's sells a wide variety of smoked products, including bacon (which was excellent), beef jerky (which everyone told me was great but was gone before I had a chance to eat any), some kind of mint jelly with garlic (Ok, you don't need to try everything there), and of course, smoked sausage. These come in several varieties, which were purchased at or around visiting day and enjoyed one week later on Fire Island.

The sausages from Oscar's Adirondack Smoke House are exceptional. Words can not describe the difference in taste between these gems in casing and the typical fare you would buy in Fairway or a supermarket. We tried Bockwurst (white: veal and pork), Italian, Bratwurst (red: pork and beef), and "German Brand," which is the large pork and beef sausage pictured. Not all sausages are created equal. In addition to the sausages pictured, they also had andoullie and kielbasa. The website has a more limited selection: I would call them if I was going to place a delivery order to try to get a better variety shipped to your home.
